The Rev. George Mathen Mission Hospital (GMM Hospital) was started on September 1, 1971, by the Holy Immanuel CSI Church, Mallappally; a congregation in the CSI Madhya Kerala Diocese. It commemorates the life of Rev. George Mathen (1819 – 1870): the first native priest of the Anglican Church; who laboured hard for the up-liftment of the downtrodden, the development of Malayalam language and education. He is considered as one of the torchbearers of the 19 th century renaissance movement in Kerala. Rev. Mathew Mathew was the founder President and Dr. B. Ekbal (Renowned Neurosurgeon & the former Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University ) was the first Medical Officer.

Target Area
Situated in a rural hamlet, this hospital mainly serves the rural folk. It caters to a population in the region spread over Mallappally, Thiruvalla, Ranni Talukes of Pathanamthitta District and Kanjirappally, Changanacherry Taluks of Kottayam District; people belonging to low and middle – income groups. This region is home to around 500,000 people, having no other proper medical facility. Local residents who struggle even for making both ends meet have to therefore seek treatment in highly expensive hospitals in towns, slightly far off, pushing people to further debt.

Over the years, it has grown from humble beginnings to a 30 bedded hospital.

Vision Statement
The Rev. George Mathen Medical Mission seeks to be a centre of healing; witnessing to the abundant life revealed through Jesus Christ.

Mission
– The primary concern of the Hospital is to provide health care in rural settings, including care outside the premises such as providing care at home for bed ridden people.
– Provide the same to the marginalized communities by organizing community clinics and other community health programs.
– Organize educational and counselling program for youth, children and labourers on preventive- health, hygiene, alcoholism, life-style hazards etc.

Management
Its administration is vested with the Rev. George Mathen Medical Mission Charitable Society, which is duly constituted and registered according to the societies act of the Government of Kerala. The Society has an elected Governing Board with 4 office bearers, headed by the Vicar of the Holy Immanuel CSI Church as the President and the Bishop of the CSI Madhya Kerala Diocese as the Patron. The society registration number is A 121/77. FCRA and Tax Exemption u/s 80G & 12A It is registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) and olds provisions for Income Tax exemptions with 80G for contributions from within India and 12A for the Hospital. Thus the donors from India are eligible for income tax deductions for donations made to GMM Hospital.

The Present Scenario
The Medical services and activities are led by the Chief Medical Officer (C. M. O.)

Doctors: In addition to the C. M. O., we have one Physician, a Paediatrician, three Resident Medical Officers and visiting Cardiologist, Nephrologist, Orthopaedic Surgeon, a Community Medicine Physician and an ENT surgeon.

Services: The Hospital runs regular morning and evening OPDs and a 24 hour casualty department. There is a well set Physiotherapy and Rehab Unit.
It has 24 hour Laboratory, X-ray Unit, Mortuary, Ambulance and a Van that supports home – based health care.

Dialysis Centre
The newly started dialysis unit adds to the capacity of the hospital to provide more service to the needy and raise the image of the hospital before public.

The Present Plan
The hospital has completed 50 years. It is everybody’s wish that a thorough revamp of the infrastructure and overall upgradation to boost up the hospital to a full-fledged and modern Secondary Level medical facility. A new building located closer to and facing the main road, would be of great use and convenience to accommodate the Emergency/ Trauma/ Critical Care Department and allied services of the Hospital; that would exude the atmosphere or ambience of an absolutely modern set- up.
